Our guide includes everything you should include on your daycare cleaning checklist. We’ve also included information on the areas that need the most cleaning and questions to ask your provider. This guide has been created by Service Pro Inc; a commercial cleaning company providing services to Alberta businesses since 2017.

Why You Need A Special Cleaning Regime
As children are crawling on floors, chewing their toys andtouching high-touch areas, they are much more susceptible to illness. Parents also expect their children to be in an environment that looks and smells rigorously clean. Therefore, you must implement a more frequent cleaning regime utilizing specific, child-safe products.
What Should Be On Your Daycare Cleaning Checklist?
Most licensed daycares will have the following included in their standard cleaning regime:
- Multiple sanitising of toys, tables andplay areas.
- Disinfect high touch areas, such as door handles, light switches andcubbies.
- Clean and disinfect nappy changing areas after every use.
- Wipe nap mats and sleeping areas.
- Clean and sanitise bathrooms and sinks.
- Vacuum and mop floors (including rest and play areas).
- Empty waste bins (especially nappy bins).
High Touch Areas
Door handles, light switches, cubby doors, toy bins, table edges andchair arms are considered high-touch areas due to being touched frequently by small hands. These should be wiped multiple times throughout the day and professionally disinfected after hours.
Nappy Changing & Nap Area
Nappy changing areas should be cleaned and heavily disinfected after every single use to prevent cross-contamination. Nap mats should also be regularly wiped down before being stored away.

Safe Cleaning Products
You don’t want to use any old, harsh disinfectants in a room full of toddlers. Ensure you’re using low toxicity products with no artificial scent, or products explicitly marked as safe for children.
Tip: Ask your cleaning provider if they follow the manufacturer's guidelines on contact time andif they rinse surfaces that come into contact with food and are mouthable.
How Often Should You Clean?
| Cleaning Task | Recommended Frequency |
|---|---|
| Sanitising toys & surfaces | Multiple times daily |
| Nappy changing area | After every use |
| Floors, bathrooms & nap areas | Professionally daily |
| Deep clean (carpets/upholstery) | Monthly or as required |
Light sanitising is usually done by internal staff throughout the day. A professional cleaning provider will provide a deep clean of the floors, bathrooms andcommunal areas after hours.

Questions To Ask Your Cleaning Provider
Before hiring a commercial cleaner for your childcare facility, make sure to ask:
- Do they have specific experience cleaning licensed daycares or childcare facilities?
- What products do they use? Are they proven safe for young children?
- Can they clean outside of operating hours so it's ready for the children the next day?
- Are staff insured, covered by WCB andrigorously background checked?
- What happens if they miss a scheduled visit or forget an area?
